| Lyra's Oxford |
[10 Dec 2009|01:14pm] |
Lyra's Oxford is a short story by Philip Pullman which is set two years after the end of the best selling series, His Dark Materials.
The story begins when Lyra notices a witches daemon being attacked by a flock of birds and decides to help the creature escape. The daemon Ragi explains that his witch, Yalena, is sick and that he came to Lyra becuse he hoped that she would help him find an alchemist named Sebastian Makepeace of whom is the only person who can to save Yalena. Lyra agrees to help and begins a quest to find the alchimist.
I found that the short story was just as captivating as the original series. It was also interesting to see how Lyra had changed as a result of the final battle. I would recommend this to anyone who loved reading His Dark Materials.

Ok so I was looking throuncgh the BooksaMillion magazine The BookPage which has book reviews and intrerviews with various arthors. It also shows different books and how much they cost (along with the BAM discounted prices). The thing that bugs me is just how different the savings are. One item was around seventeen dollars and the discount price was something along the lines of 13 dollars and some change.
Yet if you look at some of the mass produced paperbacks there is only something like a twenty cents difference between the cost price and the discount one. I don't get it why not just have a set price and be done with it? Honestly it would seriously make a lot of things easier for everyone I think in the long run.

Massive amounts of photoshop ensued.

My fingernails were secretly red. Guess it isn't a secret anymore. I really hope the size adjustment worked on this. I blame photobucket if it doesn't.

| Graduate programs |
[09 Dec 2009|07:34pm] |
This isn't strictly book related, so I understand if it needs to be deleted.
I'm applying to graduate schools for an MA in English Literature, and was wondering if anyone knew of great programs. I'm looking to stay on the east coast. My preferred states (although I'm flexible if the program is good enough) are CT, NJ, PA, and DE. (I don't know if it matters, but I am from NY.) My only requirement is that teaching assistantships are available. BUT, if the tuition is low enough, I can even do without that.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help!

11:52 AM 12/9/09 · So let me get this straight. The loophole in 'Brand New Day' is that if everyone learns the truth about how things were prior to its inception then things will go back the way they were? Those that have since learned Spidey is Peter Parker remembered knowing it before and can't figure why they forgot to begin with?
- What about other stuff?
- Will MJ & Spidey become married again by choice or by the eventual dissolution of what Mephisto did? Spidey was using organic webbing and had retractable stingers in his forearms...will those come back?
- Spidey was up to lift/pressing 25 tons and then went back to just 10...will he get his boosted strength back?
- What will happen to Aunt May?
- Will the child that Mephisto try to prevent being born still be a part of MJ & Spidey's future or has that ship been sunk?
Etc. Etc. Etc.
By the by, did anyone else find it a bit loopy in a recent Amazing Spider·Man that Deadpool mentioned the whole Green Lantern: Blackest Night thing?

| Happy Birthday John Milton |
[09 Dec 2009|03:49pm] |
Hey everyone. Just thought I'd throw it out there that today is John Milton's birthday! Or at least it would have been if had lived for 400+years haha. I've checked the tags but I was hoping every one could throw out some links to their favorite Milton related tattoos or if you were to get a Milton tattoo what would you get?
I have 2 quote I have always grappled between, I would love to have either one someone on me.
-Here my hours are free to be dedicated to the quiet Muses; and my books, which are my life, quite carry me away. -John Milton -"Freely we serve/ because we freely love, as in our will/ to love or not; in this we stand or fall" (Paradise Lost).

My first literary tattoo was "kerouac" tattooed across my left arm. I got in when I was 17. It's faded over the years and I'm not quite sure whether to re-touch it or just let Jack be....:)

| Lazy Laundry List again |
[09 Dec 2009|02:05pm] |
- Thanks for the snowflakes! I love 'em!
- I had soup for lunch. Then I had a burrito. 'Cause... you know. It was THERE.
- The grossness of today astounds me to the point where I cannot fathom getting up and going outside again at the end of the day.
- YESTERDAY, however, I actually dragged myself to the gym. No weights (oh god, I'd've died), but 20 minutes on the elliptical and another 20 on a bike made for a looser neck. Which means I can probably put off the chiropractor for another week. While I was there I saw a chick in a SK6ers shirt, and couldn't help but strike up a chat. She was at one of the Bowery shows too. Hurray.
- Mini 30 Rock marathon happened last night. Greenzo = comedy gold.
- Wow, apparently having two lunches makes you feel really full. Huh.
- Siesta now pls?
